Fotografía tomada poco antes del embarque del Ejército expedicionario a Tarapacá, donde esta unidad tendría una destacada actuación, en especial en la batalla de Tarapacá del 27 de noviembre de 1879, donde su comandante, Teniente Coronel Eleuterio Ramírez Molina, perdería la vida junto a buena parte de sus oficiales y tropa. Nótense las polainas de la tropa y algunos oficiales, prenda de equipo propia de las primeras fases de la Guerra.
